May seem unexpected, questionable on why reviewing on this movie, but hey, this will probably be one of the most complete Kollywood movie ever made. It just had it all what a movie would require to meet the audience's expectations. Panchathanthiram, directed by the ever versatile kollywood film maker KS. Ravikumar, is a 2002 tamil-language comedy film that sees the life of pilot take a huge twist and turns, and what better way to complete it with 4 of his incredibly humorous friends that adds up the spice of fun elements into the movie. The main cast played by the one and only Padmashree Ulaga Nayagan Kamal Hassan, carries a role of a carefree pilot and a womaniser who lives in Canada.
The concept of portraying Kamal's role for the entire movie was defined clearly at the early stages of the movie as it starts of with a song where gets surrounded with ladies he has been hanging around with. KS. Ravikumar always never fails to impress his audiences as I would say this will surely be his best script ever thus far. The story then develops with an aircraft hijacking where Kamal bumps into Simran, who plays the heroine in this one. It is a rare phenomenon to witness a love story being developed after a meet up in an hijack, and that too an AIRCRAFT HIJACKING! Well, what's a Tamil movie without a weird way of building a love tale.
Kamal Hassan has and always will be one of the top most influential actors not only in Kollywood, but in various dialect movies within the Tamil Cinema. Acting since he was such a young boy, he is now well renowned and one of the least celebrities that's been given the stardom and privilege to stand next to top big superstars like, MGR, Sivaji, Nagesh and so on. Panchathanthiram will definitely be one of his best movies as one will be able to witness inch to inch excellent act by the main man. Kamal Hassan who is often an individual that carries the weight of a movie on his own and unsurprisingly, he has never failed to make an impact that's worth remembering forever. This time around, he is accompanied by 4 of his funny friends, namely Jayaram, Ramesh Aravind, Sriman and Yugi Sethu and the very moment these 5 guys join forces, you can only expect laughter, laughter and laughter all the way!
Kamal who wedded Simran and thought that he has already escaped the unwanted ladies in his life, that is when things just got worse and it was so well crafted in a way that you may think that no other actor would be capable to pull it off except for Kamal! The story then develops with his 4 friends planning to bring in the gorgeous looking Ramya Krishnan to accompany and satisfy Kamal as it was his birthday and also because he was having a feud with his wife, Simran. He was very much against it and not happy betraying his wife. Kamal was then brilliantly abducted by his 4 friends to Bangalore, and there they hired a call girl, Ramya. The switch of the plot was excellently scripted after the Bangalore scene and hats off to Ramya Krishnan as well for living the characted she played. After putting up an excellent performance and almost flawless acting in Padayappa, this will be Ramya's 2nd time of sharing same screen presence with a stardom. She is a versatile actress that gives not only her best in what she does, but often a person who lives up to the director's expectations.
If there's one person that should be hugely credited in this movie, it will be none other than Jayaram. I personally like Jayaram simply because of his realness in acting and wow, I have to say he definitely played the comical role so well that even his presence on screen without dialogues would trigger laughter. That's how good of an actor he is. Nagesh, the evergreen actor played a great supporting role as well, and of course Ramesh Khanna who played minimal role in the movie but was so much effective. Manivannan did a great job as well.
Overall, a great watch and as mentioned earlier, one of Kamal's best thus far and watchable countless times.
